Novel Study

About two months ago, we were reading a novel called the Disappearing Moon Cafe. It was about the stories of a Chinese family living in Canada and how they struggled through challenges they faced. Although there are a lot of suggestive themes such as incest, the book does give us an insight into what life was like for a typical Chinese family during the 19th and 20th century.

This is what we call historical fiction. Learning facts by reading historical fiction literature is beneficial because it helps us relate to the subject more. As discussed in class, it is a proven fact that people learn far better with stories than with pure facts. A story makes learning facts definitely more interesting by bring adventure into education. A historical fiction literature  relates the reader's personal feelings to the emotions inside the book. This draws connections and makes social studies more understandable as it is not filled with technical terms that only an expert can decipher. For example, if you read a textbook with lines of facts about the history of Chinese immigrants, reading it will probably be very boring and tiresome. However, reading a thrilling novel about how a Chinese immigrant family survived in a white society sounds more pleasing. This is why many people choose to read fiction literature to learn the facts. Reading a textbook will fill the brain with facts, but reading a piece of historical fiction will enlighten your brain on the subject you're studying on by drawing connections from the daily life to the events inside a story.
